There’s something special about having hardwood floors. They can make a home look rich, luxurious, welcoming, or rustic. At Utah Design Center, we want you to continue to fall in love with your floors over and over again. So, what do you do to clean your floor? How do you take care of a spill? What happens if there’s obvious damage?

At Utah Design Center, we recommend using WOODWISE No-Wax Hardwood Floor Cleaner. This is a biodegradable and phosphate-free cleaner that works on all surface coated floors (except wax-based finishes). This cleaner dries fast and contains no oils or waxes that attract and hold soil. It lifts dirt without leaving a residue. Available to purchase in a Schmop kit. This kit includes 2 machine washable 100% cotton terry mops that are extra thick, durable and absorbent, as well as the cleaner. Perfect to get you started. Also available is a 1-quart ready to use spray, and 2 sizes of concentrate: 1-gallon and 1-quart. We also carry 2-pk terry cloth refills. Contact us for pricing and availability.

You may also use Bona Floor Cleaner. Formulated for all types of hardwood floors coated with a clear, unwaxed finish, this non-toxic waterborne cleaner leaves no dulling residue and will not dull your floor’s finish.

Below are some tips on how to routinely maintain your hardwood floors.

    1. Regularly maintain your floors by sweeping with a soft bristle or nylon broom, or using a dust mop. You can also use a vacuum with the beater bar turned off.
    2. Do NOT use a wet mop or steamer on your hardwood floors. This can damage the wood, discolor it, and leave a dull finish due to standing water.
    3. Immediately wipe up spills. You can use a slightly dampened towel.
    4. Use only products designed to clean wood floors. Avoid cleaners for tile and vinyl. Self-polishing acrylic waxes will cause wood to become dull and slippery.
    5. For spills or spot-cleaning, spray WOODWISE No-Wax Hardwood Floor Cleaner directly on the spill, or on the terry cover of our WOODWISE Terry Mop, and clean as needed.
    6. For general cleaning, spray an area 4′ x 4′ with WOODWISE No-Wax Hardwood Floor Cleaner, or spray directly onto the terry mop head, making sure not to over-wet your floor. Too much liquid will cause damage to your hardwood floors. For best results, buff dry with a towel after cleaning.
    7. Use area rugs in high traffic areas, including the front door, in front of the kitchen sink, stove, or refrigerator. This will help keep debris from scratching your floors.
    8. If you have dogs, keep their nails trimmed.
    9. Ensure shoes are properly maintained. A high heel with an unprotected tip can do a lot of damage. Also avoid sport cleats.
    10. If you need to move heavy furniture. Take care not to slide it across your floor. Have someone assist you in lifting it.
    11. Use felt protectors under the legs of furniture. Make sure you replace them periodically as they pick up dirt and debris which can be damaging to your floor.
    12. You may want a humidifier to use during winter to help with cracks or gaps.

We understand there are circumstances when damage that wiping up or mopping won’t take care of. Flooding, broken boards, deep scratches or dents. If this happens, contact us at Utah Design Center for assistance.
